The sun is a shepherd. Once I would have wanted

The touch of flesh to cap and seal my joy,

Not yet having sorted it out. Bare earth, bare sea,

Without fingers crack open the hard ribs of the dead.

If anyone, I’d say the oldest Venus

Too early for the books, ubiquitous,

The manifold mother to whom my poems go

Like ladders down – at the mouth of the gully

She had left a lip of sand for the coarse grass to grow,

Also the very quiet native bee

Loading his pollen bags. We parked the car

There, and walked on
